Survival Mode

by Johneece Cobb and Joshua Fink

I wrote this song for my nephew Edwin Cook as an inspiration to Edwin’s plight, and so many other youth like Edwin who can’t go outside, can’t go to work, can’t go to school, can’t go to church, can’t go to grandma’s house, can’t go to auntie’s house. They live in fear. Fear of people who look like them, fear of people who don’t look like them. They fear the police, they fear the politicians. Every day they are in survival mode.

Survival mode.
Survival mode.

Like a flower, you sprouted
More than just a name.
Through the cracks of the concrete jungle.
More than just a name.
Exceptionally talented.
More than just a name.
Drummer, instinctively.
More than just a name.
Well spoken.
More than just a name.
Inspirational.
More than just a name.
Nonchalant.
Edwin Cook.

Survival mode.
Survival mode.

January twenty-first, two-thousand fifteen.
More than just a date.
Creativity.
More than just a name.
October twelfth, nineteen ninety-five.
More than just a date.
Originality.
More than just a name.
Kingly.
Edwin Cook.

Survival mode.
Survival mode.

We’ll continue to love you
From Eternity and Beyond
With every beat of our hearts.
From Eternity and Beyond

Survival mode.
Survival mode.
